Eating disorders in the peripartum affect 5 - 7.5% of women, increasing the risk of impaired fetal development, low birth weight, and maternal complications. Additionally, infants born to mothers with eating disorders are at higher risk of feeding and eating difficulties, emotional and behavioural disorders, and cognitive impairments, and have a higher chance of developing eating disorders themselves later in life. Early intervention is vital to support women with eating disorders during pregnancy and their children.

This project seeks to create an online educational module which provides information to consumers to facilitate disclosure and early management.

As clinicians, researchers, and peer workers at some of Queensland’s largest birthing hubs (the University of Queensland’s Mater Research Institute; Mater Catherine’s House for Mothers, Babies and Families; and Gold Coast Health’s Lavender Mother and Baby Unit), we witness the devastating impacts of EDs on families. Our team includes psychiatrists, dietitians, obstetricians, and lived-experience members, and will engage consumer groups to ensure the module is grounded in real-world needs.

We will co-design and evaluate a 20-minute, interactive e-learning module for perinatal women. This digital tool uses adult learning principles, videos, and quizzes to educate users on ED risks and empower them to seek treatment. Co-produced with a lived-experience panel, the module will be evaluated via pre/post surveys and eventually integrated into maternity services for free, universal access. By moving beyond paper handouts to a multi-modal digital solution, we overcome barriers of cost, travel, and stigma, providing essential support "at their fingertips".
