The treatment trials
Free treatment, delivered by experienced clinicians
For young people aged 14–25 who have been experiencing anorexia nervosa for less than three years. People with atypical anorexia nervosa also eligible, regardless of weight status. A confirmed diagnosis is not required to apply.
A free, 6 month treatment program delivered by our experienced clinical team and co-designed with people with lived experience. Therapy modules are adapted from evidence-based treatments and personalised to you.
You need to be able to visit the trial site (University of Sydney, NSW) for twice weekly sessions for six months. If you can't make it in person every time, telehealth may be available.

Up to 6 months free treatment with our experienced clinical team, based on your needs. You will receive 4 weeks of the gold standard evidence based treatment, then therapy will be tailored to you depending on how you are doing. You could keep going with the gold standard package, receive extended therapy, personalised psychotherapy, or a brain stimulation package (TMS).
Treatment sessions are mostly online, however participants will need to attend at least one in-person visit at a research site:
If you have or suspect you have an eating disorder - this study is for you including Anorexia Nervosa, Atypical Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, ARFID, or OSFED.
There's so much more to understand about eating disorders. The Holistic Understanding Study is Australia's largest study into the core features of these illnesses. We need 500+ Australians living with an eating disorder to help us build a more complete picture of these illnesses, to help transform treatment and recovery.
The study combines clinical interviews, psychological and cognitive measures, neuroimaging, and biological sampling. Your results will contribute to building an evidence base that shapes how eating disorders are treated in future, and broaden our understanding of who develops an eating disorder, how they present, and the factors that contribute to them. If you are eligible, our researchers may also be able to match you to the right treatment trial. Participants will be compensated for their time.
